SESSION 10 – Biological & Biotechnological Threats in the Synthetic Biology Era
The convergence of biotechnology, synthetic biology, and global mobility has amplified biological risks and biosecurity challenges. This session examines emerging pathogens, engineered microorganisms, and biological toxins, as well as frameworks for surveillance, detection, and containment.
Topics include Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) and metagenomics for pathogen identification, biosurveillance networks, epidemiological modelling, and One Health approaches linking human, animal, and environmental health. The session encourages work on biosafety in high-containment laboratories, waste management, and biological decontamination technologies.
We particularly welcome studies on dual-use governance, regulatory oversight of synthetic biology, and ethical frameworks to manage innovation responsibly. Papers exploring cross-sector collaboration, data sharing, and rapid diagnostic solutions that enhance situational awareness and international health security are strongly encouraged.
