Prof. Amer Hosin

Professor  Amer Hosin currently holds the position of Senior Executive & Academic Advisor, Emergency and Public Safety Directorate, AD Police GHQ, UAE. Formerly 2013-2016,  Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Emergency Medicine Academy Project, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.  Dr Hosin completed his training in psychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry Medical School, Birmingham University, England; and his Child Psychiatry training at the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Institute of Psychiatry, at King’s College Medical School, University of London. His PhD in Applied Psychology, PTSD trauma  and Behavioral Science was conducted in Northern Ireland, UK where most of his subsequent research  on trauma, emergncy staff work related stress, community health, PTSD and secondary traumatisation was conducted.

 

Previously and between 1994 and 2014 Dr Hosin worked as a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Academic Leader (at London Metropolitan University, formerly University of North London). He has specific passion for teaching in Higher Education. He has taught, designed and contributed to the delivery of a range of undergraduate, postgraduate professional courses and successful completion of several PhDs projects.

 

Professor Hosin has taught in Higher Education institutions in England for over 25 years. His previous teaching includes the Middle East; Tuzla Medical School (involvement in the European Task Force on Rehabilitation of Bosnian Universities); Northern Ireland; St Martin’s College, University of Cumbria, Lancaster, England; and London Metropolitan University, London, UK. At the latter Dr Hosin directed for several years the MSc Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health Postgraduate Programme alongside other programs, including designing the MSc Risk Assessment and Disaster Management with LMU Business School. 

 

 Other main duties Dr Hosin enjoys include the supervision of PhD research students in areas such as Stress in Work settings; Triage of Mental Health and Wellbeing in disasters; Secondary Trauma among professionals working in emergency settings; and Mental Health of Survivors of Major Traumatic Events and/or Disasters.  These areas were clearly highlighted in his three books and recent major chapter publications on Displaced Populations and Refugees of Multiple Traumas’ published lately in Gregory R. Ciottone (ed.), Disaster Medicine, 2nd edition, Elsevier, 2015.  

 

Furthermore, Dr Hosin has acted as a consultant and book proposal reviewer for various leading publishing houses including Arnold, Pearson, Routledge and Sage relating to topics such as applied cross-cultural psychology, stress, risk and trauma, displaced populations in emergencies and disasters, traumatized refugee families and children of multiple trauma and child psychiatry and traumatize children. Additionally, between 1997 and 2007 Dr Hosin chaired the Arab Medical Union in Europe, UK branch; and also acted as the associate editor of the ArabMed Journal published by the Arab Medical Union in Europe.

 

With regard to local and international partners and links, Dr Hosin has (in recent years) organized various successful conferences and workshop training programs on Work-Related Stress and Wellbeing, Trauma Rehabilitation, PTSD, Risk & Disaster Management and Mental wellbeing in Emergency and Disaster Settings which took place in cities such as London, Amman (Jordan), Istanbul, Munich, Düsseldorf, Boston, Toronto, Paris and at several locations in the UAE.

 

It is worth noting that some of these workshops and  conferences (which Dr Hosin chaired or co-chaired) were delivered in association with the World Health Organization, Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, WHO, EMRO; the World Psychiatric Association; and was supported by other organizations such as the Royal College of Psychiatrists, UK; the Royal College of General Practitioners, UK; the Royal College of Surgeons, England;  the International Medical and Educational Trust, USA; the British Arab Psychiatrists Association, UK; and the Centre for Trauma Recovery and the Department of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, School of Medicine, University of Missouri, USA.

In December 2013   Dr Hosin also co-chaired and organized with colleagues from Harvard Medical School the first Emergency Medicine Conference which was held in Abu Dhabi.  Subsequent Emergency Medicine Conference events which He also organized and chaired  with colleagues from Harvard and University of Rome Tor Vergata in Abu Dhabi were delivered in October 2017 and 2019. In his capacity as a Senior Executive & Academic Advisor, Emergency and Public Safety Directorate, AD Police GHQ, UAE Dr Hosin has planned the strategic vision and formulated   mission statement both of which have focused on delivery of best training practices, professional development, achievement through investment through capacity building and work that recognize needs and evidence based research.
